How does the Paso del Norte Health Foundation assess the needs of the region?
A course of collective assessment is done of the region, and the needs are determined according to the research. After review, initiative objectives are developed and an allocation is recommended to the Board of Directors.

How does my organization apply for a grant?
Our program officers are always available to discuss ideas for future partnerships and welcome suggestions from regional organizations.

When a new Request For Proposals (RFP) is launched, the Foundation typically hosts workshops for nonprofit organizations to better understand the purpose of the initiative and how to submit a proposal.

The Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant proposals. RFP announcements are disbursed throughout the region through various communication avenues. If your organization is interested in receiving materials regarding the Foundation, click here.

What type of programs does the Foundation fund?
The Foundation funds programs related to the promotion of health wellness and education in the areas that pertain to; Encouraging Physical Activity and Balanced Nutrition; Reducing Risky Behaviors; Promoting Clean and Safe Environments; and Building Capacity.

What is an ‘initiative?’
An initiative has been defined as the power or ability to follow through energetically with a plan or task. The Foundation uses the term to communicate a health position or focus area integral to the long-term health improvements of the region. Does the Foundation give multi-year grants?
The Board of Directors does approve multi-year commitments through initiatives. However, grants to organizations are evaluated and funded on a yearly basis. Program Officers review the initiatives outcomes of the previous year, and extensions or additional program funds are granted based on the evaluation of program progress, budgets, and objectives.

What are the deadlines for proposals?
The deadline depends on when the proposal was released; proposal deadlines are clearly stated on the Request for Proposals. On average, the timeframe is 60-90 days from when the proposal was announced.

What are the Foundations guidelines for funding?
Although the Foundation would like to respond affirmatively to all requests, they are bonded by a set of priorities and guidelines in the grant making process. Some of the restrictions are; unsolicited grant applications, requests from outside the geographic area, no brick or mortar, or a direct payment for acute care. It is suggested that you review each Request for Proposal (RFP) on how to apply for a grant.

Does the Foundation fund grants to individuals?
The Foundation is a private foundation, guided by IRS regulations that prevent them from providing assistance to individuals.

What is the Foundation’s giving history?
Presently the Foundation has committed approximately $113 million to the Paso de Norte region since 1996. Archived initiatives/programs.

When was the Foundation Founded?
The Foundation was established in 1995 from the sale of
Providence Memorial Hospital to Tenet Healthcare Corporation for $130 million. (more)

Who oversees the Paso del Norte Health Foundation?
The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors and managed by a professional staff. The Board of Directors determine policies, set programs and administers budgets, approve appropriations, investments, accomplishment, review programs, and grant objectives. The program staff evaluates grant applications, seeks out institutions, carries out activities in the Foundation's fields of interest, develops appropriate terms and conditions for support, and recommends grants and Requests For Proposals (RFP) for funding. In general, grants to organizations and RFPs are approved by the President of the Foundation and by Senior Staff.

Where does the Foundation’s grant money come from?
The Foundation obtains grant money from the income and gains of investments. The investments are managed to provide a perpetual source of support for the Foundations programs. The level of Foundation expenditures each year takes into account, among other things, the Internal Revenue Code requirement that foundations disburse annually approximately 5 percent of the market value of their investment assets.

Does the Foundation receive donations?
The Foundation is not publicly supported.
