Healthy Human Sexuality Initiative aimed at improving the sexual health of all people in the region. Primary focus is on CDC's Healthy People 2010 goals, capacity building, and improving public knowledge about responsible sexual behavior across the lifespan.
Purpose:
This initiative is a leadership position as well as a funding process for the Foundation. It is not a program. The purpose of the initiative is to effect long term improvements in public health by improving sexual health through education and prevention among regional residents. The initiative helps grantees create and implement effective and imaginative programs emphasizing sexual health for the reduction of poor health outcomes, such as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), unintended pregnancies, and sexual violence/abuse as well as for the promotion of good emotional and social health outcomes.
This initiative attempts to foster a sexually healthy society with current medically accurate scientific information, an integrated view of sexuality across the lifespan, community dialog, responsible programming for individual and systemic change, positive public image, and valuing the sanctity of sex. Additionally, it allows the Foundation enhanced opportunity for leveraging external funds, establishing partnerships, and funding grantee programs that acknowledge the complexities of this topic.
Sexual Health:
Sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, and social well-being related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction, or infirmity. Free from sexual coercion, violence, or abuse, it includes the ability of individuals to make informed decisions and to take responsible action regarding sexual behavior, gender identity/roles, contraception, reproduction, and have positive sexual relationships.
Goals:
Goal #1: Advance Healthy People 2010 and Healthy Border 2010 objectives related to sexual health.
Goal #2: Increase organizational and individual capacity for improving sexual health and responsible sexual behavior.
Goal #3: Improve public knowledge, attitudes, and environments for sexual health and responsible sexual behavior across the lifespan.
