The goal of A Smoke Free Paso del Norte is to have a comprehensive and coordinated approach to reduce tobacco use in the region. This is to be accomplished by:
- Youth prevention of initiation. Cessation for pregnant women and protection of newborns from secondhand smoke.
- Smoking cessation for youth, young adults, and adults. Media and counter marketing campaigns with emphasis on youth and the quit line.
- Clean indoor air ordinance/policy protection and promotion. Education related to tobacco control laws.
- Tobacco control networks and trainings/capacity building.
- Prevention and cessation efforts directed at irregular smokers.
- Expansion into Cd. Juárez. Evaluation and technical assistance.
In 2003, 18% of adults in El Paso smoked cigarettes, down from 23% in 1996. This initiative was developed to address the regional tobacco use problem especially among youth, pregnant women, people with small children, and those who lack economic resources to provide for their own and their family's wellness. The health promotion initiative helps the Foundation establish new relationships with community agencies, while encouraging other community partnerships. Working together, these organizations will take an active approach for reducing tobacco use in the region.
