Who We Are - Providence Memorial Hospital

It began on January 10, 1952...
Providence Memorial Hospital opened its doors as a not-for-profit medical facility providing the best available health care to all the people in the El Paso, Texas region. This was a culmination of a vision of many business leaders and a great source of pride for the community.

For its time, the building design was considered revolutionary. The 272 bed, state-of-the-art hospital included such innovations as a nurse call button in each room, central air conditioning and a built-in oxygen supply.

Over the next 40 years, Providence made tremendous strides in medical technology and the delivery of health care services. The expansion of additional (164) beds, a nuclear cardiology test, a hospital-wide computer system, and a radio-transmitted cardiac monitoring system for the emergency room made Providence the place to go for quality health care.

Many changes were taking place over the four decades since Providence first opened its doors, yet quality of health care services and the commitment to the community was never jeopardized. In 1995, changes continued in the health care environment, which forced the hospital Board of Directors to make a difficult decision in selling the hospital.

To continue the tradition of excellence that had always been the hallmark of Providence, the Board of Directors use the money from the sale of the hospital to created the Paso del Norte Health Foundation.
