Qué Sabrosa Vida – $3 million for 7 years
The Qué Sabrosa Vida (QSV) program touched the lives of thousand of families by instructing them on how to easily incorporate basic nutrition and cooking skills into their daily lives, without having to greatly alter the traditional border diet. Foundation staffer selected to the Leaders across Border program

Nohemi Rubio, Associate Program Officer from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation has been selected to the 2015 Leaders across Borders program from the U.S-Mexico Border Health Commission. Ms. Rubio is one of 11 individuals selected from throughout the country to participate in the program. She is the only representative for El Paso, Texas.

EP Behavioral Consortium named a finalist in National Initiative aimed to improve health and well-being

The El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium is one of 57 finalists in the running to receive a grant and technical support from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). If funded, the grant would go to the Paso del Norte Foundation for El Paso to become a leading community on health improvement, as part of an initiative known as SCALE (Spreading Community Accelerators through Learning and Evaluation). It Takes Two – $1 million for 3 years
The YWCA coordinated a teen pregnancy prevention program for sixth, seventh and eight graders. Middle schools in the nine area schools districts were eligible for the program free of charge. It Takes Two focused on empowering teens to make healthy choices about their relationships to prevent premature pregnancy.
The program was conducted over three class sessions and focused on sharing the responsibility for healthy romantic relationships with male/female presentaion teams.

Since 1999 the Paso del Norte Health Foundation has worked diligently and strategically to transform the border into a smoke-free region and to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke. The rate of adult smokers was reduced from 21.5 percent in 1996 to 13.3 percent in 2010. This is one of the most significant statements of impact on the Foundation’s work. 20th Anniversary - Walk El Paso program

While studies showed that exercise combined with healthy food choices reduced the risk of chronic diseases, it appeared that El Paso was not following the national trend with 75% of adults not participating in any physical activity. Most sedentary group was women ages 35 to 65 years of age.

Enroll El Paso Coalition shares success of the nation's top performers

Open Enrollment to select a plan or be automatically re-enrolled in quality, affordable coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace ended February. 15, 2015. The Enroll El Paso Coalition, comprised of local agencies, assisted El Pasoans in the process for a second year. A total of 54,117 individuals during the two open enrollment periods were signed up, adding 21,432 to last year’s count.

Programs that helped the environment and health clinics

The health impact that 20 years have made in the region, is represented by many of the programs and initiatives that were developed and supported by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation to promote health and prevent disease in the region.
Below are two programs that were developed in 1997 to improve the health of the region.

Latina women play a key role in the health and well-being of their families. Too often this burden of being the essential unifying force to support and guide the family leads to women putting aside their own needs. Research has shown that Latina women are more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety and depression and more likely to delay seeking help for such symptoms.
