New partnership helps screen dental patients for diabetes

August 24, 2023

With funding from the Health Foundation, the Hunt School of Dental Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC-El Paso) is screening patients for diabetes at the TTUHSC-El Paso Oral Health Clinic.

The program engages dental students, TTUHSC-El Paso faculty, and community health workers to assess a patient’s risk for diabetes and, if the patient is at risk, navigate them to a primary care provider. As one of the few diabetes screening programs affiliated with a dental school in the U.S., more than 170 patients have been screened for diabetes since early 2023.
