New report identifies alcohol as drug of choice among El Paso youth

Alcohol is the leading drug among El Paso young people, according to a new report from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation. Underage Drinking in El Paso - A status report was commissioned by the Foundation’s Shift+ initiative. The goals of the initiative are to reduce underage drinking and binge drinking in the Paso del Norte region.
According to the report, more than 28% of 9th graders reported drinking alcohol in the past 30 days. About 17% reported binge drinking, or having 5 or more drinks in a row on one occasion. Among those youth who reported binge drinking, more than half said they had ridden with a driver…

FECHAC and the Health Foundation partner to stem underage and binge drinking along the border

So far 15 mom-and-pop stores in Ciudad Juárez have signed on to be “Responsible Merchants” as part of an effort by FECHAC and the Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s Shift+ initiative to stem underage and binge drinking along the border.
Agreeing to be “Responsible Merchants” means the neighborhood stores will:
- Check IDs for underage drinkers.
- Sell alcohol only during legal sales hours.
- Display a Responsible Merchant Poster & Youth Education Ad.
- Separate alcohol and non-alcohol products.
- Separate alcohol advertising from candy or youth-oriented items.

Health Foundation Grants $6 Million to Support Dental School

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s board of directors is pleased to announce a $6 million grant to support the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine (WLHSODM).
The Health Foundation will contribute $6 million over six years. Funding will support the start-up phase of the school with opportunity to leverage State funding.

Smoking ban at nearly all El Paso County facilities starting January 2017

On Monday, October 17, El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar and Commissioners approved a policy that protects all those using County property and facilities from exposure to secondhand smoke. County Commissioner Carlos Leon along with the County’s Human Resources Department introduced a policy that would prohibit the use of tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, pipe tobacco, and electronic cigarettes.

On September 3 and 4, the Fundación Paso del Norte para la Salud y Bienestar invited the Juárez community to participate in Juárez en Acción – a weekend of activities designed to promote gender equality, a peaceful environment, and healthy eating and active living in the municipality of Ciudad Juárez.
